Why I Tithe | 6 Reasons That Will Change How You Give

⛪️ MONDAY MORNING CHURCH ⛪️

Hey Discover Church,

Welcome to week three of Monday Morning Church. I’m really enjoying these weekly encouragement and culture building blogs. Today let's discuss Tithes and Offerings.

When I was in Elementary school, my parents would give me a list of chores, and at the end of the week, they would give me an allowance. After slaving over dishes, laundry, and vacuuming for a week straight, they would give me $5.00 for the week.

I would take the $5, go into my room, and bring back .50 cents that I would bring to church to place in the tithes and offerings baskets as it went by. I learned from an early age about the importance of tithing, but not everyone grew up in the church, has learned the value of tithing, or trusts what happens when we give.

Briefly, before I share about why I tithe, here’s a quick definition of tithes and offerings.

Tithing

Tithing is giving the first 10% of your income back to God. It’s a way of saying, “God, I trust You and put You first in my life.” It’s a big act of faith and obedience that helps the church make a difference and reminds us that everything we have comes from God.

Offering

Offering is what is given above and beyond the tithe. These often support specific ministries, outreaches, missions, or projects. Both tithes and offerings are represented in scripture both in the Old Testament and New Testament, before Jesus taught on earth and after.

6 Reasons Why I Tithe:

  1. It provides for God’s house

When we tithe, we are investing in the spiritual transformation that happens inside it. Our tithe provides for ministry, outreach, discipleship, and the next generation.

The same goes for the lights in our home. Despite what your kids think, the lights don’t stay on by accident! When everyone does their part, the house runs strong and everyone benefits. The church functions in the same way – the lights don’t stay on, ministries aren’t staffed, kids miss their Bible story crafts, and worship services are not held without the finances of God’s people working together to support God’s church.

Malachi 3:10 - “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse…’Then put me to the test,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven…’”

2. It tells God I trust Him

Tithing has less to do with what’s in your bank account, and more to do with what’s in your heart. Every time we give first, we declare: “God, I trust You more than my paycheck.”

Think of it like a farmer planting seed. The ground might be dry, but planting anyway says, “I believe the rain is coming.” Tithing says, “God I trust you.”

Proverbs 3:9‑10 - Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing…

3. It creates margin in my life for God to fill

We say it this way… “God is bad at math.”

When you give the first 10%, it creates space for God to show up in unexpected ways. It’s not subtraction, it’s making room for supernatural addition.

Ever cleaned out a closet only to realize how much junk was crowding space you didn’t know you had? Tithing does that in your heart, it clears out clutter and makes room for peace, provision, and purpose.

Philippians 4:19 - And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

4. It reminds me that I am not my source

Tithing is a regular reminder that our job, our hustle, and our savings account are not our providers, God is.

It’s like using a garden hose. The hose delivers water, but it’s not the source, the faucet is. Your job might deliver income, but God is the true source behind the flow.

Psalm 24:1,10 - “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it… For every animal of the forest is mine…”

5. It connects my money to Kingdom purpose

Every dollar tithed is a seed sown into someone’s salvation story. It turns physical dollars into eternal impact. It takes a dollar and turns a follower of Jesus into a disciple of Jesus.

Imagine writing a check and watching it ripple into marriages restored, kids meeting Jesus, and lives set free. That’s what your tithe does, it echoes in eternity.

2 Corinthians 9:7 - Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give… for God loves a cheerful giver.

6. It lets everything else in my life know that God is first

It’s a weekly or monthly declaration that God gets the first word in every area of my life: my time, my relationships, my future. When God is first in your finances, it becomes easier to keep Him first everywhere else.

It’s like setting the home screen on your phone. You put the most important apps up front so you see them first. Tithing is your way of setting God as the “home screen” of your heart, it keeps Him front and center.

Matthew 6:33 - Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

As a newly forming church, we’re laying the foundation for something that will outlive all of us, and tithing is a big part of that. When you tithe, you’re not just giving to a church, you’re building one. You’re helping us create a place where lives will be changed, families restored, and Jesus is made known in San Marcos for generations to come.

Thank you to those who have already started tithing and giving offerings. Your early investment is paving the way for what’s ahead.

This is just the beginning, and we’re so grateful to be building it together with you. Let’s keep putting God first and trusting Him to do more than we could ever imagine.
