The Middle Seat: Finding God’s Grace When Life Feels Uncomfortable
Pastor Kyle Veach
Life often feels like sitting in the middle seat on an airplane. You’re squeezed between circumstances you didn’t choose, carrying burdens you didn’t expect, and wondering why everyone else seems more comfortable than you. Many people look around and assume others have it easier, better, or more together. Yet God’s answer to our struggles isn’t a better seat—it’s His grace. Recently, while preparing to teach about generosity and trusting God with our finances, I couldn’t stop thinking about God’s grace. The more I reflected on it, the more I realized something important: we often overvalue money because we undervalue grace. We overvalue what we can accumulate, control, and possess, while overlooking the incredible gift God has already given us through Jesus.
The truth is that trusting God with your money is not primarily a financial decision—it is a faith decision. And faith begins with understanding grace.
Why Grace Is the Foundation of the Gospel
The Gospel simply means “Good News.” The good news is that Jesus came to do for us what we could never do for ourselves.
Hebrews 4:14-16 reminds us:
“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Jesus understands every struggle, every fear, every temptation, and every burden we carry. Because of Him, we don’t have to approach God with shame or embarrassment. We can come boldly before Him and receive mercy and grace exactly when we need it.
Grace isn’t a side note in Christianity. It is the foundation of everything. In fact, grace is mentioned over 125 times in Scripture, and many New Testament letters begin by emphasizing grace because it is central to salvation and spiritual growth.
When you reach the end of your abilities, grace becomes the bridge between where you are and where God is leading you.
Four Types of Grace Every Christian Needs
The Bible reveals several ways God’s grace works in our lives. Understanding these different expressions of grace helps us trust Him more deeply.
1. Saving Grace: God Did What We Could Not
Saving grace is the grace most people think about first. It is the grace demonstrated through Jesus’ death and resurrection. We were separated from God because of sin, but God made a way for us to be rescued.
John 3:16 says:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son…”
Ephesians 2:8 explains:
“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.”
Salvation is not earned. It is received.
Acts 15:11 says:
“We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus.”
Romans 3:24 adds:
“Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.”
This changes everything. You don’t need to compare yourself to others. You don’t need to be jealous of what someone else has. You don’t need to chase approval or validation. You have grace.
The person with the better job still needs grace. The person with the larger house still needs grace. The person who appears to have everything together still needs grace. One of the most powerful truths of Christianity is this:
You don’t get good to get God. You get God to get good.
2. Justifying Grace: Your Record Has Been Cleared
Justification means God sees you as righteous because of Jesus. A simple way to understand justification is this: it’s as if you never sinned. That doesn’t mean your mistakes never happened. It means Jesus paid the penalty for them completely.
2 Timothy 1:9 says:
“For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.”
Many people spend their lives trying to improve themselves. They chase self-help strategies, productivity systems, health trends, and personal growth techniques hoping to become enough. But God’s grace starts somewhere different. Instead of telling you to clean yourself up first, Jesus offers forgiveness first.
Ephesians 2:5 says:
“That even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.”
Because of Christ, your slate is clean. Your sins are forgiven. Your identity is secure.
That is justification.
3. Teaching Grace: Grace That Changes Us
Grace doesn’t just save us. It shapes us. Teaching grace helps us grow into the people God created us to become. One of the biggest questions we should ask ourselves is: What is teaching me?
Every day we are being formed by something:
Friends
Social media
Podcasts
News
Entertainment
Scripture
Church
The reality is that much of our spiritual formation happens through the voices we listen to most. Teaching grace calls us higher. It corrects us when necessary. It challenges our assumptions. It helps us align our lives with God’s truth. Sometimes people reject biblical teaching because it conflicts with what culture says. Yet growth often happens when God’s truth challenges our perspective.
Proverbs 27:6 says:
“Wounds from a friend can be trusted, kisses from an enemy cannot.”
God’s grace is not permission to remain unchanged. His grace is not freedom to sin. His grace is freedom from sin. A loving God tells us the truth because He wants the best for us.
4. Empowering Grace: Strength for Every Battle
There are moments when life presents obstacles that seem impossible to overcome. The Bible often uses the image of mountains to describe overwhelming challenges. Empowering grace gives us the strength, authority, and endurance to face those mountains. This grace is especially important when we’re exhausted, discouraged, or tempted to quit.
Empowering grace reminds us:
You are not alone.
God is with you.
His Spirit is working in you.
His strength is available to you.
Paul wrote that God’s grace is sufficient. That means His grace is enough for whatever you face today. When you don’t know what to do next, empowering grace helps you take the next step. When you feel overwhelmed, empowering grace steadies you. When you face obstacles, empowering grace reminds you that God is bigger than the mountain in front of you.
What Grace Has to Do With Generosity
At first glance, grace and giving may seem unrelated. In reality, they are deeply connected. When we understand God’s grace, generosity becomes a natural response. We don’t give to earn God’s love. We give because we’ve already received God’s love. We don’t trust God with our finances because He needs our money. We trust Him because He has already proven His faithfulness through His grace.
This is why trusting God with your money is not ultimately a financial decision. It is a faith decision. Every act of generosity becomes an opportunity to declare: “God, I trust You more than I trust my resources.”
Grace reminds us that everything we have comes from God, and generosity becomes one way we worship Him.
Grace Is Enough
Whether you feel like you’re sitting in the middle seat today or carrying burdens nobody else can see, God’s grace is available to you.
Saving grace rescues you.
Justifying grace forgives you.
Teaching grace shapes you.
Empowering grace strengthens you.
Whatever you’re facing today, don’t overlook what God has already given you. You have grace.
And grace is enough.
